Gianni Versace’s designer clothing line, Versace, began in 1972 with a collection designed for Fiori Fiorentini which is located in Lucca, Italy. He then began to create designer clothing for Italian labels like De Parisi, Genny, Callaghan, and Alma.

1974 marked the first time that his name was included in the brand name of the designer clothing when he collaborated with Complice for a work which he fully designed from the beginning to the end. Versace went on to open their first boutique in 1978. The boutique was located in Milan. It carried other labels as well as Versace’s own designer clothing. Soon, the designer label was so popular that Versace boutiques began to spread into other countries.

In 1985, Versace added the designer clothing label, Instante, to their clothing label family. This label was similar to the Versace line, but it was more affordable.

Versace had a very unique way of designing his clothing. He would give his assistants vague sketches; they were then responsible to making the idea a reality by producing wearable designer clothing garments. In 1997, Gianni Versace was murdered by a serial killer. Versace's brother, Santo Versace, became the new CEO of Versace. Gianni's sister, Donatella Versace, became the head of design.
